Baba: Remembering Your Pawsitive Love Affair

You paved the road to my heart with your pawprints. Today you are no longer at the door to greet me or make me smile or laugh anymore, and my life is so quiet without you, Baba you were so much more than just a pet. You showed us that love is pawsitive and a four-legged word. You were a family member, my first child and a lifelong friend who is treasured. You’re a loving soul, whom I will never forget!

It’s been more than six years, and the hole in my heart is still there. The silence never goes away, for I still listen for you and miss you every single day. Oh, my dearest companion, and friend I ever had, my heart will always treasure the pawprints left by you.

Remembering his naughty little habits

Pretty

When he feasted on raw peas and got sick

He would forever tag along from room to room. The frisky three-month-old puppy, sitting right beside me as I did my chores. One day as I sat shelling peas, he popped one that escaped the dish, and soon he was a naughty cherubic baby asking for more. I gave in to his demands, and he had quite a few only to throw up after a while. That’s how I discovered raw peas and puppies are not best friends.

He loved coconut

It was the Magh Bihu time in January, and I was scraping coconuts to make traditional Bihu delicacies, and you guessed it Baba was ready to taste them. It was hilarious to see him eating raw coconut slivers and later licking off the laddus in a second. This time I was cautious, to give him only a limited amount. Coconut laddus remained a favourite with him to his last day.

He was a pawsitive salad lover

He loved papayas and cucumbers. Curiously he would eat the diced pieces of cucumbers right after his lunch or dinner. We discovered his love for papayas when he would dance in anticipation of eating them. Baba also loved newly harvested potatoes, especially the winter ones. One day I caught him stealing raw vegetables from the basket. It was hilarious to see the sheepish look on his face. On another, I found the potato bin nearly empty, because he had gobbled quite a few of them. We made sure that cucumbers were always on the vegetable list for Baba.

He had a sweet tooth

Kesariya pedas, Baba loved them

Yes, chocolates are not supposed to be eaten by dogs, but Baba was not just a dog, he was a special one. How he loved chocolates, he recognized the wrappers. Baba could finish a packet of gems in a second and gobble up Cadbury bars in no time. We had to give in to his demands, and he did eat chocolates right up to his last day. More about his pawsitive habits later for now I would like to wish Baba, my dear pet dog  a happy birthday wherever he is and pray that he eats his fill of sweets.

Remembering him on his Birthday today

On October 28th his birthday, we always served him his favourite Kesariya Pedas because he loved them. Till date, we offer that to the family deity and pray for peace for his soul.
